Van Halen - Video Hits Vol. 1

    Warner Vision/Warner Vision . R4 . COLOR . 120 mins . G . PAL

How can I do a review of a Van Halen concert without being a big fan of the band? Easy, tell it like it is.

During their 1991-1992 "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" tour, director Mitchell Sinoway used 15 cameras to film 2 nights of the concert and then edited material from both nights to produce this disc. If the clothing on the Eddie Van Halen switches throughout a son, you know why. At times it does seem like a live rock video with the camera IN the crowd recording the fans signing along.

Not as vibrant as other releases from WV which is a shame as it could have brightened up the imagery a little more. Tone down the black level and another improvement would have been felt.

Sharpness is lacking and detail suffers because of this. Given that it was recorded on film, there was potentially enough resolution to produce a sharper image but this will have to do. The entire 2 hours is placed on a single layer which may also be the cause for lower detail than normal yet the image exhibits no really obvious mpeg atifacting.

Raw and harsh. Don't listen to this at reference level unless you're a long time rock fan with the damaged ears to go along with it. The linear PCM soundtrack provides an umblemished representation of the concert which also goes a long way to provide the rawness of the music but also is a culprit in keeping the video bit-rate low.

Your subwoofer should get a decent workout throughout.

I know a few people who can sit in a room with rock music blaring hours on end. To those of you, go forth and enjoy this disc. To the fans, you'll definitely enjoy the concert but for non Halen and non rock fans, keep walking to the next titles in the display rack.
