Superjoint Ritual - Live in Dallas Texas
Warner Vision/Warner Vision . R4 . COLOR . 53 mins . M15+ . PAL

Superjoint Ritual are a form of super-band in the heavy metal world. The members stem from other well known metal bands and came together for this project with a common desire to make some noise. The bands they hail from are Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Hank Williams III, Eyehategod and Down, Pantera perhaps being the most recognisable and this is where lead singer Phil Anselmo hails from – or should that be wails? The remainding members of the band are Jimmy Bower on guitar, Kevin Bond also on guitar, Joe Fazzio on drums and the strangely named III on bass. Together they produce heavy metal music at its most brutal.

This release features a home video of the band performing in Dallas to an enthusiastic crowd. The tour was to promote their album Use Once and Destroy, which collated a decade plus coalition and features a good selection of the album's tracks.

Superjoint Ritual

This show was recorded in Dallas on June 28, 2002 in front of a packed and very enthusiastic crowd. Anselimo is without doubt the driving force and his energy is infectious. The stage setting is simple and for a band such as this, it is perfect. Somehow an over-produced show would not fit well here. You can probably guess from the song titles what this band is all about - the profanities are constant and for this type of show they're necessary. If it is heavy metal in its most brutal and aggressive form that you are after, then look no further.

The video transfer for this release is as expected. It is in full frame and contains a lot of grain, which is caused by low level and coloured lighting. Rather than hindering this show it actually enhances it, giving a pleasing, basic look and feel. There are numerous other problems consistent with live shows such as loss of detail and colour saturation, but again these are expected. The most redeeming feature here though is the direction. There are several cameras used and the transition from one to another is fast paced and entertaining, giving the viewer good coverage of every aspect of the show and audience.

The audio is the most important part of any music release and this one really delivers. It offers a choice of Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo, DD 5.1 surround and DTS 5.1 surround. The DD 2.0 offers CD quality and the DD 5.1 is also a very nice mix, but I have to go with the DTS track. This bass-driven show kicks the subwoofer into overdrive and never lets up. Surround use is effective, with plenty of audience noise and music filtered through the rear speakers. Whichever audio track you choose to listen to you won’t be disappointed.

Extras include two music videos and a photo gallery. The music videos are for the songs The Alcoholik and F*ck Your Enemy and again demonstrate well the bands energy. The photo gallery contains 24 shots of the them performing and posing.

Overall this is a release that fans will love. It is also a good introduction for those who like this style of music and would like to hear more from one of the hardest metal bands around. The video transfer is not too bad, but the audio quality is very good, the inclusion of a DTS track a real bonus. The extras are minimal, but are ones that fans will again enjoy.
