Here's Marvin Gaye caught in concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival, just four years before his untimely death. The costumes show this was the height of bad-taste time in rock, with Marvin strutting his stuff in an outrageous red tux festooned in sequins of all sorts. Marvin's music though is a real crowd-pleaser - especially when he launches into a medley of the duets he recorded earlier with partner Tammy Terrell, including the famous Ain't No Mountain High Enough A nice tribute to his very spunky singing partner, who tragically died of a brain tumour when only 24.

The video transfer is just fine for its vintage, as a historic presentation of a great performer. The audio, however, leaves a lot to be desired. On both the DTS 5.1 track and on the linear PCM two-channel track, the centre-channel seems to dip considerably each time Marvin starts to sing. Meanwhile, the backing music seems just fine. Even Marvin's spoken introductions to his songs seem just fine. But whenever he opens his mouth to sing... the volume falls to an emasculated level. I tried the disc on two of my players, including a Pioneer 655-A; poor results all the time. Unfortunately there are no extras included on this release.
