Michael Keaton was cool and dark in Batman, weird and scary in Beetlejuice, creepy and evil in Pacific Heights and funny in Night Shift, and with this release of 1991’s One Good Cop on DVD fans can add sentimental and tough to their Keaton DVD collection.

When Narcotics cop Artie Lewis’ (Michael Keaton) partner (Anthony LaPaglia) is gunned down in the line of duty leaving his 3 children fatherless Artie and his wife (Rene Russo) decide to take legal guardianship of the kids. After growing attached to the kids, Artie soon grasps the reality of the situation and realises that taking care of 3 kids on a cops wage in a small apartment isn’t going to work out so he has to take desperate measures to support them.

Under the guise of investigating the murder of his fallen partner he takes it upon himself to deliver his own form of justice on the drug lords responsible but ultimately puts himself and his new family in mortal danger.

Michael Keaton shines above the ordinary story and gives an outstanding performance in this not so great movie, making the transition between man on the edge to struggling sympathetic family man without appearing forced or impassive. Unfortunately this transition makes the movie seem unfocused, unsure of exactly what it is trying to achieve. Is it a police action thriller or an emotional tear jerker?

    Contract

A minimum of effort and expense has been put into the production of this DVD, evident in the complete absence of extras, not even a token theatrical trailer or animated menu; this is a true budget release.

The audio track is available in English, French and Spanish, each in a 2 channel mix. Dialog is as clear as possible on a stereo track, but audio never really gets a chance to shine in this mostly dialog driven story. No major problems exist in the audio and 2 channels is plenty for this style of movie.

The video transfer is presented in the original 1.85 aspect ratio and is enhanced for widescreen displays, yet there are a number of serious problems. Grain is the least of the problems but is overly bad in some scenes. Film artefacts are particularly obvious in the opening scenes and towards the end. Flecks of dust and other foreign visual items are quite distracting. Compression artefacts are a serious and bewildering problem, the movie only runs for 100 minutes on this dual layer disc, compression problems shouldn’t exist but in some fast moving scenes they are clearly and distractingly obvious.

Even the packaging is slightly faulty, listing the running time at 80 minutes when in reality the true running time is 100 minutes, or did we get One Good Cop: Directors Cut as a special bonus?

Overall, One Good Cop is a bit of a hit and miss affair, torn between being an action oriented cop-gone-bad thriller and a sentimental family tear jerker, it doesn’t really hit the mark on either but has moments in both to make it worth a watch. At the very least it’s a decent midday movie or rainy day rental as long as you’re not expecting too much from the audio or video
