    Kremmen - The Movie

    Universal/Universal . R4 . COLOR . 24 mins . PG . PAL

I remember watching the Kenny Everett Video Cassette when I was a kid and being excited every time the animated Captain Kremmen came on. There was only ever a brief minute or so of animation, but it appealed to me.

Fast forward 20 years or so. I am watching the DVD release of Kremmen The Movie aghast. Where is the show I loved so much as a kid?

This is crap. You’d have to be a pretty hardcore fan to get into this and even then I have trouble imagining it’s possible to watch this repeatedly. It is just agonising. It’s out of date by centuries, the animation is well below even poor standard, and the script is practically non-existent (at least the late Everett has the balls to admit that frequently throughout).

As to plot, it seem that Kremmen of the Star Corp is needed back on Earth to help deal with something that’s making parts of the universe disappear. And that’s all.

"Uh, excuse me, we’re on the trail of a monster whose been eating our universe..."

There are moments of titillation and political incorrectness that are just winceful and the overall picture quality/delivery here is pitiful. I am horrified.

This looks like it hasn’t even been dusted off from whatever shelf it sat on for the last million years. The animation is of a student quality and has been disastrously infected with artefacts throughout the years; even harbouring edit writing on the film stock (6:31 for six frames). While colours and such are okay and blacks are true, there are myriad cel artefacts about and even some decay. The whole thing smacks of a student low-budget work with plenty of stills, cutout montages and simple cutout animation. There are also numerous moments of film wobble and jitters running throughout the generously proportioned 24 minutes of film here.

Dolby Digital stereo brings every Kenny Everett voice to the film with a healthy selection of silly sound effects and music that is very ‘80s in origin. Yes, the synthesiser rules here. Dialogue is clear, but the jokes are pretty pissweak and I didn’t even laugh once, as much as I wanted to.

There is nothing on this disc but a static menu with Scene Selection and Play icons. Way to spend money you guys.

      Overall
    Contract

For fans of the original series on television, this is bound to disappoint. I wouldn’t say I was the biggest fan of Everett’s work, but by no means was I the least. Anything else as an extra or contribution would have been welcomed here, but there’s nothing but a big slap in the mug for the punters.

Rent if you are absolutely desperate, but otherwise avoid like a case of space plague.
