Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr maintained a warm relationship throughout their respective careers. Though Deborah always maintained it was friendship only, I suspect this friendship was a lot more than skin-deep. Robert Mitchum loved women. All women. And he showed his affection in the simplest, most uncomplicated way possible. And that's why the movie Heaven Knows, Mr Allison runs counter to the Mitchum legend - but the film is none the worse for it. In fact, this is a Second World War fairy-story. It's about a tough Marine and a beautiful nun who find themselves stranded together on a South Pacific Island where they must eventually face the Japanese -- as well as each other. It's a love-story without the sex. It's beautifully told, and although it's totally unrealistic as all good fairy-stories are, you find yourself surrendering totally to its charms. The screen rapport between Mitchum and Kerr is palpable, even in this totally unrealistic tale. Mitchum's performance as a tough, relatively uneducated Marine is particularly finely done, with his persona showing deep dimensions. And while watching it, you realise what a lost opportunity it was when John Huston chose Humphrey Bogart as his male lead in The African Queen. Bogart was excellent. But Mitchum would have been sublime.

This is a very pleasing anamorphic widescreen transfer with glowing South Pacific colours and solid hues. The sound is standard two-channel stereo, with no great dimensionality, but is certainly serviceable with no distortion or harshness. There are no extras of any kind.
