It's hard to believe that Con the Fruiterer, aka Mark Mitchell, became such a house hold name back in the late 80's with a skit on the comedy show that could only be classed as 'lame'. To some that may be harsh, this reviewer included, but when living through this so called phenomenon back then and watching it again now almost 2 decades later you really have to ask yourself what were we laughing at? If the audience reaction is anything to go by, the biggest laughs came from the stereotypical satire as opposed to any comedic timing. Thankfully, we've come a long way since then; or have we? This best of DVD contains 17 of Cons better segments, begining with what looks to be some of the earlier episodes when he was just being introduced to the Australian public. Obviously, they just didn't get it first up. Things start to pick up when special guests such as Jason Donavon and Robert Dippier ... dippibididdy ... dipppadippi ... the Dipper put the segment into the spotlight. Con the Fruiterer was to become the closing climax for what was the Comedy Company. Comedic Viagra never existed in the 80's even if the cast was ironically wooden. Pun intended!

At an hour in length, this best of is present in its original 4x3 ratio presentation. Video quality varies but improves as the show moves through its seasons. Not much can be said for the production value when you're looking at a corner of a studio with some fruit on a bench and posters on the wall. We're not watching this DVD for the technical aspects though are we. Audio wise we're blessed with a 2 channel stereo sound field and just makes those one liners echo with such exuberancy that you'll ... well it sounds like it did back then. Extra! Extra! read all about it, this DVD is nothing but one big extra in itself; 17 short segments of one of the characters of the comedy company. I admit, there were times when I laughed hard with Con the Fruiterer. Sadly, it wasn't while watching this DVD but rather when I was younger and my humor senses just needed a slight tickle to set them off. Today I pine for the Late Show or re-runs of the D-Generation or Seinfeld or the Simpsons. I'm sorry to say but at best this will only garner a coupla plays.
