All the Best - The Live Collection cobbles together 20 music performances from live shows filmed during Tina Turner's latter-day career, from 1985 to 2000. They are testimony to the way Tina rebuilt her career from virtual has-been status to top of the heap -- this is a gutsy lady, one of the great rock 'n roll performers. But sadly, this compilation ignores her roots in the 1960s when, with unlamented hubby Ike, Tina was just one of the strongest, sassiest, downright sexiest performers of her era. Some film material from that period shows a level of visceral excitement that the material in this compilation never really approaches. The live sweat of the early years has been replaced by Barnum and Bailey circus extravaganza, similar in feel to the bloated, ersatz Rolling Stones of their final (we hope) years. Most of this material has surfaced on earlier DVDs. It will be a handy compilation for fans who lack any material to date. But it won't satisfy any fans looking for fresh material, or, like me, for something with a focus on when she was creating her own personal music history.

The fullscreen transfers are of great quality, with rich and dense colour and with matching high-quality, gutsy 5.1 Surround sound. No complaints about delivery of picture or image. The main extra is a reasonably lengthy and satisfying interview, filmed recently in her beautiful Swiss home. This runs for 25 minutes and she comes across as a fascinatingly honest, well-balanced and strong woman who has her life and career in perfect balance and perspective. She is a survivor, and it's undeniable intelligence which has brought her through. Then there are five bonus music clips, including a live performance on a Parkinson television show. The interview with Parkinson isn't included. None of these bonus clips add much to what we've seen in the concert footage in the main program. They hardly rate as bonus material; they should simply have been extra DVD program chapters. Lovers of rock 'n roll circus extravaganza will find this to their taste -- lovers of the more honed-down, earthier early Tina will want to hold out for the day when the historic vaults of the 1960s are finally unlocked.
