I Am Not An Animal
BBC/Roadshow Entertainment . R4 . COLOR . 205 mins . G . PAL

No, these are not animals. They're animated figures posing as animals who have been brought up in a research facility, without an inkling that they are in fact animals.

These over-developed brains in animal bodies are kidnapped. Unfortunately, they weren't humanely put down, but are left to agonise on and on in a quite unfunny, tedious way about life, death and the meaning of everything. They are kidnapped, then liberated, set free in the wild... the torments are endless. And those torments are all ours.

The animation is crude, and at times downright ugly. It's not your super-appealing South Park crude, which is in fact totally inspired in its Japanese or Matisse-style minimalist cut-out mode. No, it's just crude and ugly, in keeping with the level of wit and invention.

Yes, you may have guessed right. I just can't get into this show at all. Perhaps you do. If so, here's 205 minutes of it, and good luck to you.

Image and sound quality are excellent. There's an audio commentary from three talking heads over three episodes, plus a relatively interesting making of featurette which I found more worthwhile than the show itself.

"As Rene Magritte might have said, these are not animals. However, he would have said it with more style."

"An essential Spaghetti-Western, given deluxe treatment by MGM."

    Stripes
"Falls short of being a classic, but it gives us Bill Murray, so it just has to be seen."

    Creature Comforts - Series 1: Vol. 2
"Delicious comic idea given the right-royal Aardman treatment. "

    The General (Buster Keaton)
"Forget that this is a silent movie. This 1927 classic has more expression, movement and sheer beauty (along with its comedy) than 99 per cent of films made today."

Dr Who - Claws Of Axos
"Is it Worzel Gummidge? No, it's Jon Pertwee in his other great television role, as the good Doctor battling all kinds of evil on our behalf."
