10 Things I Hate About You

    Touchstone/Warner Bros. . R4 . COLOR . 94 mins . PG . PAL

During its theatrical release, the television was swamped with trailers, teasers and TV spots to advertise the film. However, the film still didn’t do overly well at the box office, and was more widely received on video. 18 months later, Buena Vista released a DVD version of this teenage romance tale.

Newcomer Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) falls in love with the beautiful Bianca (Larissa Oleynik from TVs Alex Mack) as soon as he sees her. However, Bianca is the sister of a “hideous breed of bitch” known as Kat (Julia Stiles) and daughter to an insecure, over-protective father. There are the house rules, which state that Bianca is not allowed to date unless her older sister Kat is dating. This proves to be a problem for Bianca as Kat has no intention of getting with any of the “miscreants” at their rich school. Cameron has a plan though. He finds the most outrageous person he can find to be a match for Kat, who is suavely played by Heath Ledger.

The video transfer is very clear, and boasts great, bold colours and excellent colour definition. There is no bleeding of colours, and tones appear natural and lifelike. This is a superb transfer from Buena Vista, and much much cleaner from Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion. The aspect is 1.78:1 and is 16x9 enhanced, which is an improvement from its R1 counterpart. The transfer is clean, crisp and clear and is a gem to watch, with great tones and shades of colours coming through. The opening credits are at times illegible but that is due to the type of font used, and the scribbly effect of the text. This could have been changed as they are bright solid colours, and at certain times are a strain to read.

The layer change occurs at 54:14, and is fairly neat, but very noticeable which detracts from the continuity of the film. Being a shortish film with barely any special features, why not make it a single layered disc and stay clear of a layer change? This would be the only downside to the video transfer on the disc.

      Audio
    Contract

The surround audio is available in English, plus four other languages, which seems like a waste of space for a R4 disc and a film in English. The rear channels are only used for adding to the richness and fullness of the music and the occasional background effects. But it is a very good soundtrack to listen to, and easy to understand as dialogue levels are at a good level throughout the film. All the dialogue is easily understood, apart from one line early in the film where there is loud music and background noise. There are no audio sync problems with this film, and all voice levels are at natural levels.

The downside to the soundtrack is that it comes from the front of speakers, and uses very little ambience, which reminds you that you are in fact watching a movie. The score and music soundtrack are really easy to listen to, and feature popular songs which add to the enjoyment of the film.

A menu. Wow, that's just thrilling, but the usual from Buena Vista.

      Overall
    Contract

10 Things is easily a movie that you can come back to again and again and again, and while it isn’t brilliant filmmaking or doesn’t use any groundbreaking technology, seriously consider adding it to your collection. The humour is at times very funny, and this movie is just easy to watch. The extras department is lacking, even just some of the trailers or TV spots from the original advertising would have been good. Overall, an easy film to watch and an enjoyable one at that, and if all the New Releases are out, grab this one.
