As Arnie would say "I like this movie ... that's why I'm going to review it quickly". Well, he certainly didn't say that in commando but it's a lame enough attempt to match th presentation of this dvd. :)

John Kimble (Arnold) is on the hunt for Cullen Crisp (Richard Tyson), wanted for murder and linked to 3 million dollars worth of drug money. Problem is, Cullens wife Rachael (Penelope Ann Miller) has the money and has disappeared with 'their' son. A now dead junkie has tipped off Cullen to the whereabouts of his wife, whereas Kimble has found out the same details from the junkies girlfriend.

It's up to Kimble and his partner Phoebe O'Hara (Pamela Reed) to pose as a Kindergarten teacher, get to know Cullens son, in turn find the mother and save the day. Problem is, O'Hara has fallen ill so it's up to Kimble to become the teacher which is where the sub-plot of fun begins.

Arnie watching over 20, hyped up on red cordial, kids? No. Arnie shooting da bad guys and saving da good guys? Yes.

Pan and chopped and scanned and framed and full screen and everything that is not letterboxed. Yep, another Arnie title to be released in the Pan and Scan format, the last being Twins. Well, the movie doesn't really deserve to be presented in it's original aspect ratio but dammit we dvd folk deserve it no matter how much we despise the movie nor if we are never going to rent it.

As a full frame transfer it's pretty darn good but it seems the print used could have used some 90's cosmetic surgery to give it that younger look and feel. I wonder if smearing the print with Oil of Olay would do the trick?

Nice color rendition throughout the movie, not so great black level and decent sharpness is all that I would say about this transfer. When watching high quality discs pre and post this movie you sort of realise how lame the image looks in comparison.

Dullby Surround, to sum it up with an Austrian accent. You know this is a very basic soundtrack when you hear that customary cheap gunshot sound effect that is heard in almost all cheap gunfights. You know the one I mean, it's the same sound no matter the location or environment.

Arnies accents is very legible though and he has a few classic lines that aren't distorted. The musical score is typical Randy Edelman with some sections sounding like they had been borrowed from previous attempts.

One thing to notice is that the menu only allows english to be selected for the audio yet cycling with the remote provides some 6 other languages. Same goes for the subtitles.

If you feel that production notes, theatrical trailer and cast crew biographies are your standard fare these days, skip to the next paragraph. If not, skip there anyways.

  Overall
Contract

It's a decent movie. Arnie has made some simple comedies in his time, the best being True Lies IMHO. :) Atleast he's provided better product than any of Stallones attempts at humor.

Only recommended if you are a true Arnie fan and need this title to complete your own personal Arnie Box set.
