Tom And Jerry - Classic Collection: Vol. 7

Here's another collection of 13 classic Hanna and Barbera cartoons of the classic duo, Tom and Jerry.

Yes, these are squarely aimed at the youngest viewing audience -- no pretension here that adults may enjoy them too.

But they're pleasingly nostalgic in small doses. Take a look occasionally if you're using the television as a child-minding device -- a minute or two at a time is all you need to be transported back to another place; another time.

Here are the episodes Posse Cat, Two little Indians, Life with Tom, Puppy Tale, Hic-Cup Pup, Little School Mouse, Baby Butch, Mice Follies, Neopolitan House, Down Hearted Duckling, Pet Peeve, Touche Pussy Cat, and Southbound Duckling. Of these, my favourite is of course Touche Pussy Cat. Jerry's little Mouseketeer friend is so goldarn cute.

Who needs a Tardis when you have Tom and Jerry? They instantly take you back to the days of the Saturday cinema matinee, with its serial, cartoon and B-grade feature, with iceblocks in wafer cups, and Jaffas rolling down the aisles. Children screaming excitedly as the cartoon logo flashed on the screen -- my ears still ache from it all.

Decent transfers of somewhat damaged material. The colours are just beautiful, in their antique hues, and though there are scratches and flecks, we don't care.

These cartoons come from the very early 1950s, and most are presented in their original full-screen formats. The final two are from the Widescreen era, but after the opening titles, the cartoons are viciously cropped to fullscreen. That's not good enough, in these discriminating days.

      Recent Reviews:
    by Anthony Clarke

    A Fistful of Dollars (Sony)
"An essential Spaghetti-Western, given deluxe treatment by MGM."

    Stripes
"Falls short of being a classic, but it gives us Bill Murray, so it just has to be seen."

    Creature Comforts - Series 1: Vol. 2
"Delicious comic idea given the right-royal Aardman treatment. "

    The General (Buster Keaton)
"Forget that this is a silent movie. This 1927 classic has more expression, movement and sheer beauty (along with its comedy) than 99 per cent of films made today."

Dr Who - Claws Of Axos
"Is it Worzel Gummidge? No, it's Jon Pertwee in his other great television role, as the good Doctor battling all kinds of evil on our behalf."
